Spring Clean Your Make-Up Bag

Winter is thankfully over & Spring is on its way, so now is the time to start a little Spring cleaning & where's the best place to start.....your make-up bag!

Not only will you be clearing out all the old, dried mascara, caked, cracked powder compacts & half inch long pencils, it will be a perfect excuse to indulge in a whole new, fresh range of cosmetics for the new season!

It's not something we generally think about but cosmetics, like food, have a shelf life & if we don't throw away out of date products, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria which can be an invitation to nasty germs onto the most delicate areas of our face. Our eyes & lips are particularly susceptible to transference of bacteria so the first important rule is to always wash your hands before touching these areas.

Eye Make-Up

Mascara should be replaced every 3 to 4 months even if you haven't used it very much. Bear in mind that the tube is a dark, wet environment & once opened, can be a perfect site for bacteria. Every time the brush is used & replaced into the tube, any germs it has picked up along the way will go back in as well. Obviously mascara contains preservatives but these have a limited time period & will only last for so long. Also, if you get an eye infection, always dispose of any eye make-up you have used to prevent re-infection.

The same rules & shelf life apply to liquid eye liners although pencil liners last longer, up to 2 years, because you can freshen the surface when sharpening (not with a dirty, rusty old sharpener!) Cream eye shadows needs to be replaced every 6-12 months due to the emulsion content of them but powder shadows last up to 2 years. Bear in mind that if your powder shadow becomes hard & caked it is more difficult to pick up the pigments with your brush.

Lip Make-Up

There are varying opinions on the shelf life of lipstick & lip gloss, but generally it is around 2 years. If you're not sure, your nose is usually a good judge of character in this situation. If it doesn't smell good.... throw it out!

Long lasting lip colours may not last as long as the creamier formulas due to their ingredients evaporating quicker & keeping your lipstick in a cool place also helps it to last longer. Lip liner pencils like eye pencils will last for up to 2 years. If you are unlucky enough to get a cold sore, always throw your lip cosmetics away.

Face Make-Up

Foundation has a shelf life of 6-12 months depending on its formula. Oil based foundation tends to last longer than the water based formulations. Also as they age, the consistency can thicken, causing a streaky, uneven appearance. Concealer generally lasts for a period of 12 months. Stick concealer tends to last the longest & you can tell when it's getting too old as it can dry out & not go on smoothly. Liquid based concealers can begin to separate with age & become lumpy. Try to wipe the top of your stick concealer or use a clean brush when applying it to avoid transferring any bacteria from spots to other areas of the face.

Powder can last up to 24 months, after this period it will begin to dry out. In the case of pressed powders, natural oils build up on the sponge which can cause imperfect application so regular cleaning of applicators is essential. Cream & powder blush, like eyeshadow, have a shelf life of 6-18 months. Powder blush can also have a tendency to start splitting & cracking as your brush wears the palette down.

Brushes & Applicators
Cosmetic brushes, applicators, tweezers, eye lash curlers & also your make-up bag need to be looked after for hygiene reasons & to provide longevity. Natural & synthetic brushes can be washed in a mild shampoo. Don't submerge them in water, just run them under the tap & leave them to dry on their side, this will keep the bristles soft & in good shape. In between washes you can use an anti-bacterial wipe to remove any foundation or powder deposits. These wipes are also an effective way to keep tweezers, eye lash curlers & sharpeners free from bacteria.
Wash your sponge applicators & puffs in anti-bacterial washing up liquid. The formulation of these is perfect for removing oil based foundations. Squeeze out the excess water & allow to dry thoroughly before putting back in your compact. If they are still damp this will encourage bacteria & mould.

And Finally.......
Let common sense prevail. Always wash your hands, replace lids, don't add water to your products to make them go further, don't share your cosmetics, if it smells bad it probably is, if you know it's old, throw it out!

Top 10 Beauty Tips

We've Created A List Of 10 Beauty Tips To Keep You Looking Absolutely Fabulous

1. Don't just apply sunscreen to your face, use it on your hands, décolletage & neck as well. These areas tend to age more quickly than other parts of the body so they need just as much protection & TLC as your face. This rule also applies even when the weather is cloudy! The UV rays still penetrate the cloud.

2. To help your lipstick last longer & have more staying power, before applying, gently buff your lips with a wet wash cloth/flannel. This will exfoliate your lips & remove any rough, dry skin to leave a soft, smooth surface & a perfect base. Apply a dab of foundation & powder then apply your 1st coat of lipstick. Blot with a tissue then reapply with a second coat to seal in the colour. Also, long wear lipsticks or lip stains will provide longer lasting colour & wear than standard lippies.

3. Treat your face to a regular facial at least once a week. This can easily be done at home without the expense of visiting a salon. (Although this is a wonderful treat now & again!) Always cleanse, tone & moisturise on a daily basis, use a gentle facial exfoliator once a week & for a real treat, a facial mask suitable for your skin type once or twice a month. You'll be amazed how soft & revitalised your skin will feel. Don't forget the rest of your body, a body scrub will leave your skin vibrant & tingling with freshness. Slather some moisturiser all over & you'll be glowing!

4. Try to keep your lipsticks & blushers from the same colour range. For example dark shades of browns & chocolates co-ordinate with a bronze shade of blusher. Lipsticks in the pink & purple palette work well with pink, rose & plum hues of blush & coral & amber lipsticks blend with blusher in the peach, apricot range. This really does create a more defined, balanced & co-ordinated look.

5. Keep your skin in tip top condition by keeping it hydrated. Always moisturise, including your neck & décolletage & at night time use a replenishing night cream to restore moisture lost during the day. Try to drink water throughout the day & keep a little spritzer bottle of water in your bag to spray over your skin as required to keep it hydrated, cool & energized.

6. If you're running low on your foundation & haven't got time to get a new one, try blending a little into your moisturising cream to "stretch" it temporarily. The coverage won't be as full as normal but it will "do the job" until you can replace it.

7. Don't forget your feet! Our feet are often neglected & there's nothing worse than seeing hard, yellowing skin & dull, untreated toe nails especially when the sun comes out & sandals come on. There's a whole host of products & accessories available to keep your feet in tip top condition. Salt & sugar scrubs, pumice stones, body brushes & exfoliators. Keep these items at the side of the bath & give your feet a little TLC every bath time. Remember to moisturise & slick on a little polish to keep them looking in tip top condition.

8. Chipped nail polish is a big "No No". Unpolished nails will look better than unsightly chipped ones so if it starts to chip..... remove it! If you're running short on time & need a quick fix, you can temporarily paint over the nails or file down the tips slightly to prevent it looking so obvious. If you're repainting/repairing one nail, when using nail polish remover, hold the pad between your fingers not with the tips so you do not disturb the polish on your other nails. Don't use your nails as screwdrivers or any other DIY tool!!! When removing dark shades of polish, if it leaves staining around the the skin, try soaking in a little lemon juice & warm water. This helps to naturally remove the staining.

9. Skin illuminators are a wonderful creation & help to brighten the complexion with a shimmering, radiant glow. Containing micro, light reflecting particles, they make the skin sparkle, draw attention away from imperfections & enhance your face with a natural radiance.  You'll look younger & more vibrant with a luminous, healthy glow.

10. When you've got a special event to go too & would like a little touch of colour, try applying some self tanning lotion. It will give you a wonderful, healthy golden glow & look far more attractive than milky white arms & legs! Remember to do your application the day before as fake tan acquires a "distinctive" odour as it develops. The following day you can shower, then gently pat your skin dry. How To Improve The Appearance Of Your Legs

It's the time of year when we usually cover up & neglect our legs & feet, but use the time now to get them into shape for the Spring when you can unveil your gorgeous looking legs in style! Follow these 5 simple, easy steps.

1. Dry Skin Brushing: A simple yet effective way to improve & stimulate the circulation, improve skin tone & smoothness & help to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Use a natural bristled brush, using long, sweeping strokes. Start on the soles of your feet, working upwards & always brush towards the heart.

2. Moisturising: Always moisturise your skin with cream or lotion, particularly after bathing to help hydrate, soften & protect the skin. A couple of drops of bath oil added to your bath is also a great way of keeping skin supple & helps to lock in moisture. It feels quite luxurious, particularly with scented oils, remember to gently pat the skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing.

Cyclax Moistura Intensive Body Conditioning Lotion

3. Exercise: A little exercise every day is undoubtedly going to benefit your circulation & muscle tone. Try to walk a little more each day, take the stairs not the lift, do some simple exercises like calf raises, squats & leg lifts. Even when sitting you can still do simple ankle rotations!

4. Depilation: Keep your legs smooth & hair free. No one likes unsightly hairy legs! There are various home methods available, shaving, depilatory creams or wax strips or you can visit your local beauty salon for a wax treatment.

5: Finishing Touches: Until the sun shine arrives, try using an instant self tan or for a longer lasting colour, a self tanning lotion to give your legs a little golden colour. Finally, keep your toe nails in shape & slick on a touch of colour with a shade of polish to suit your taste.
